Pressotherapy and Pregnancy - Safety, Benefits and Precautions

Pregnancy is a special time, but often brings with it physical discomforts such as fluid retention, heavy legs and varicose veins. Pressotherapy offers a safe and effective way to relieve these symptoms. However, there are important precautions, such as avoiding specific accessories, such as the pant cuff and abdominal cuff. In this article, you will discover all about the benefits, safety and usage tips of pressotherapy during pregnancy.

What is pressotherapy?

Pressotherapy, also called mechanical lymphatic drainage, uses cuffs that create pressure waves. This technique stimulates blood and lymph circulation, which helps reduce swelling and relieve discomfort.

Benefits of pressotherapy during pregnancy

  1. Reduction of fluid retention (edema).
    • During pregnancy, fluid retention is a common problem, resulting in swollen legs, ankles and feet. Pressotherapy stimulates the removal of excess fluid through lymphatic circulation, which can reduce swelling.
    • Relief from heavy and tired legs
      • The extra pressure on the legs during pregnancy can lead to discomfort. Pressotherapy can help reduce this tension by improving blood circulation.
      • Support for varicose veins
        • Pregnancy increases the risk of varicose veins due to increased pressure on the veins. Pressotherapy reduces this pressure and promotes better circulation. Want to know how pressotherapy helps relieve varicose veins? Read our article: pressotherapy for varicose veins.
        • Relaxation and stress reduction
          • The gentle, rhythmic pressure waves of pressotherapy not only offer physical relief, but also provide a moment of relaxation, which can reduce stress during pregnancy.

          Safety and precautions

Although pressotherapy during pregnancy can be safe, it is important to follow some important guidelines:

          1. Consult with your doctor:
            • Before starting pressotherapy, it is essential to seek advice from your doctor or gynecologist. Especially with pregnancy complications, caution is advised.
            • Use only leg cuffs:
              • The pant cuff and abdominal cuff should not be used during pregnancy. These accessories may put pressure on the abdomen and pelvis, which may be unsafe. Use only the leg cuffs to treat swelling in the legs.
              • Adjust the pressure:
                • During pregnancy, a low pressure setting is most comfortable and safe. Excessive pressure should be avoided.
                • Beware of complications:
                  • Do you have pregnancy complications such as hypertension or placental problems? Pressotherapy is not recommended in such cases.

How does pressotherapy work during pregnancy?

Pressotherapy is performed with leg cuffs that create pressure waves from the feet to the upper legs. These waves stimulate lymph and blood circulation. A session lasts an average of 20-30 minutes and can be repeated regularly, depending on the symptoms.

                  Use of a Pressotherapy system

Nymph’s system consists of a pump and 1 or more cuffs, these are easy to use, safe and effective. It is important that you follow the instructions given to you by your nurse, therapist or doctor.

Before using the system, remove compression bandages or stockings. Making sure you are in a comfortable position, place a cylindrical cotton bandage or jersey stitch on the affected limb if necessary. Place the cuff on the limb to be treated and connect the cuff to the pump.

Adjust the pump settings to the desired program, then turn on the pump.

The cuff will alternately inflate and deflate, providing a gentle massage. This stimulates blood and lymph flow in your affected limb. If the pressure is too high and you experience discomfort, you can reduce the pressure setting on the pump. This can be done even during the therapy session already in progress.

It is important that you follow the instructions given to you regarding the duration and frequency of use.

After completing therapy, the cuff and any cotton bandage should be removed. If you are wearing compression garments, you can put them back on. Experience over many years has shown that very few problems have been experienced by persons using this system. However, if you become breathless or your limb becomes swollen or painful, or if the skin becomes red and inflamed during treatment, you should stop immediately and inform your treating physician as soon as possible.
